The Back to School Prep I Start Now So August Is Not Chaos
If you are anything like me, you are currently living in full summer denial. The pool bag is permanently by the door, bedtimes are more of a suggestion, and I have said “sure, one more popsicle” more times than I can count. And yet my calendar keeps whispering that the first day of school is only a few weeks out. Most Kansas City area districts head back in mid August, which feels very far away right up until it is suddenly next Tuesday.
I used to be a night before the first day kind of mom. Tags still on the shoes, no clue where the water bottles went, panic buying folders at 9pm. These days I do a little bit at a time starting in late July, and it makes that first week so much calmer. Here is exactly what I am doing right now so August is not chaos.
Heads up, a few of these are affiliate links, which just means if you grab something I get a tiny commission at no extra cost to you. I only link the stuff I actually use.
Start the bedtime reset before you actually need it
This is the one I always want to skip and always regret skipping. If your kids have been going to bed whenever the sun finally gives up, like mine, do not wait until the night before to fix it. I start pulling bedtime back by about fifteen minutes every few nights, so by the time school starts their little bodies are not staging a full revolt at 7am. Same with wake ups. A slow reset beats one brutal Sunday every single time.
Do the closet and shoe check now, not in the Target parking lot
Kids grow in secret. I swear my youngest went up a full shoe size while I was making dinner one night. Before you buy a single new thing, have everyone try on last year’s clothes, shoes, and jackets so you actually know what you need. Then you get to shop the gaps instead of panic buying a cart full of stuff they already own.
While you are in there, here is my favorite tiny sanity saver. I label everything with iron on name labels: water bottles, jackets, lunch gear, all of it. The lost and found at school is basically a graveyard of unnamed hoodies, and I am tired of donating ours to it.

Set up one landing spot by the door
The single thing that saves my mornings is having one designated spot where everything school lives. Backpacks, shoes, the folder that needs signing, all of it right by the door. We use a row of entryway wall hooks at kid height so they can hang their own bags, which means I am not the one tripping over them at 7am.
If you have a little command center energy in you, a simple family dry erase calendar on the wall has saved me from missing more than one spirit day. Everyone can see what is coming, and I do not have to be the human family reminder app.
Sort out the lunch and snack situation early
Packing lunches is the daily task that quietly breaks me by October. What helps most is having the gear ready before the morning rush starts. I keep a stash of bento style lunch boxes and a couple of good insulated water bottles so I am never hunting for a matching lid at 6:45am.
My other trick is a snack bin at kid height in the pantry, filled with grab and go options they are allowed to take without asking. It cuts the morning negotiations way down, and honestly it makes them feel a little independent, which they love.

Do a five minute paper triage
The paperwork avalanche is real. Enrollment forms, supply lists, the eighteen emails from the school in a single week. I make one folder, digital or physical, where every bit of it goes, so I am not searching my inbox for a permission slip on the morning it is due. Ten quiet minutes now saves a lot of frantic scrolling later.
Save a little calm for yourself too
This is the part I forget every single year. The transition is a lot on us too, not just the kids. Somewhere in all the prep, block out one small thing that is just for you. A quiet coffee on the porch before the house wakes up, a walk, an actual lunch that is not the crusts off a PB and J. You are about to be everyone’s alarm clock, chauffeur, and emotional support human. Refill your own cup a little.
The takeaway
None of this has to happen in one overwhelming Sunday. A little bit at a time, starting now, is the whole secret. By the time those Kansas City school doors open in August, you will feel like you actually have a handle on it instead of running on coffee and pure panic. Well, mostly. There is always a little panic. That part is just parenting.
What is your number one back to school sanity saver? Drop it in the comments, I am always stealing new tricks from you all.
xo, Pam
