Best Baby Monitors Worth the Investment
Baby monitors are one of those purchases where the price range is enormous and the options are genuinely overwhelming. You can spend $30 or $350 and there are parents who will tell you both choices were exactly right for their family. Let me help you figure out which one is right for yours.
I did a deep dive on this one because I wanted to feel confident in what we ended up with. Here is where I landed.
The Nanit Pro: Worth It for the Analytics
If you want the most data about your baby’s sleep, the Nanit is the monitor everyone talks about. It gives you breathing monitoring (via a wearable band), sleep analysis, and clear HD video. The app is genuinely well-designed and the camera quality is excellent. I found the Nanit Pro camera at Best Buy and the picture quality is impressive. If you are someone who will actually use the sleep data to make adjustments, the Nanit earns its price tag.
The Owlet: Wearable Pulse Ox Monitoring
The Owlet Dream Duo combines a video monitor with a sock that tracks oxygen levels and heart rate while baby sleeps. It is the choice for parents who want the most reassurance from a health-tracking perspective. It is not cheap, but for a family where peace of mind is worth paying for, the Owlet Dream Duo is the one to look at. Note that it is a wellness device and not a medical one, but many parents find it hugely reassuring.
The Affordable Option That Still Delivers
The VTech and Motorola monitors in the $50-$80 range on Amazon do exactly what a basic monitor needs to do. Good video quality, two-way audio, night vision, temperature display. If you are not interested in app connectivity or sleep analytics and just want to see and hear your baby, a solid video baby monitor on Amazon is a totally reasonable choice.
What I Ended Up Choosing
I went with the Nanit. I like data and I knew I would use the sleep tracking, so the investment made sense for us. But I genuinely think the right monitor is the one that fits your anxiety level, your budget, and your habits, and not everyone needs the premium option to feel comfortable.
One Thing to Consider
If you have a strong WiFi connection in your nursery, a smart monitor works great. If your WiFi is unreliable or your nursery is in a dead spot, a non-WiFi monitor might actually be more dependable for you day to day. Think about your specific setup before you commit.
Which monitor did you choose and were you happy with it? Tell me in the comments. I am always looking for opinions on this stuff.
