The Budget Backyard Glow Up: Patio Finds I Am Loving This Summer
It is officially the time of year when our whole life moves outside. The kids eat popsicles on the back steps, dinner happens on the patio more nights than not, and I am out there with my feet up every single evening, because growing a human through a Kansas City summer means I have earned it.
Here is the thing though. Our backyard did not always feel like a place you wanted to be. For years it was a sad slab of concrete with two camp chairs and a kiddie pool that had seen things. This spring I gave it a little glow up. Nothing major, no contractor, just a handful of budget finds that completely changed how the space feels. Today I am sharing the ones that actually earned their spot.
Heads up, some of these are affiliate links, which just means if you grab something I get a tiny commission at no extra cost to you. Only things I actually use made the cut.
Solar string lights, obviously
We have zero outdoor outlets on the back of the house, which is why I put off string lights for literal years. Solar ones solved the whole problem. The little panel stakes into a planter, the lights charge all day, and around 8:30 the whole patio turns golden without me touching a thing. The budget solar globe sets run under twenty dollars and come with eight light modes, of which I have used exactly one. Warm white, always. I am begging you not to do the rainbow flash setting.

An outdoor rug that can survive a Midwest thunderstorm
A rug is the single fastest way to make a concrete slab look like a room. I went with a 5×8 woven waterproof rug, and I know woven plastic does not sound chic, but I promise it reads expensive from five feet away. It anchors the seating area, it hides the crack in the concrete that has been there since we moved in, and when a storm rolls through I just let it get rained on. It dries by lunch. KC weather cannot be trusted between April and July, so anything that lives outside here needs to be a little bit unbothered.

The scalloped umbrella moment
Apparently scalloped umbrellas are the outdoor trend of the summer, and for once in my life I am on a trend while it is still a trend. The wavy edge makes the whole patio look like a little European cafe, and the fringe versions are even cuter. Ours is cream with white trim and it makes me unreasonably happy every time I look out the kitchen window. Shade you actually want to sit under, imagine that.
Big planters that fake a green thumb
I do not have a green thumb. I have a thumb that has personally apologized to several ferns. But two oversized planters flanking the back door, filled with the hardiest things the garden center sells (sweet potato vine and a dracaena spike, if you are wondering), make it look like someone with an actual gardening hobby lives here. The trick is going bigger than feels reasonable. One large planter looks intentional. Five tiny pots look like a rescue operation.
Outdoor pillows that do not live in fear
I used to do the pillow shuffle, carrying cushions inside every night like they were precious cargo. Never again. Outdoor pillows with waterproof covers stay out all season, take a surprise storm like champs, and instantly make the seating look plush instead of practical. My only rule is one color family plus one pattern, so it feels collected and not chaotic.
A drink tub, because hosting season is here
With the World Cup crowd rolling through KC this month, we have had more people in our backyard in three weeks than in the entire last year. A galvanized drink tub on a stand is the cheapest hosting upgrade there is. Fill it with ice, dump in the juice boxes and the seltzers, and nobody is wandering in and out of your kitchen all night. It also means I am not playing waitress all evening, which this pregnant lady deeply appreciates.
The takeaway
None of this was a renovation. It was a rug, some lights, a couple of planters, and the willingness to stop treating the backyard like a storage area. All in, the whole refresh cost less than one nice dinner out for our family, and it bought us a whole extra room for the few months KC actually lets us enjoy being outside.
The glow up was never really about the stuff anyway. It is about where everyone wants to be at 8 pm, and right now that is our patio, under the string lights, with somebody asking for one more popsicle.
What is your backyard missing this summer? Drop it in the comments, my cart always has room.
