Classic Brazilian caipirinha cocktail with muddled lime and ice

Classic Caipirinha

If you have ever spent time in Brazil, or around a Brazilian family like mine, you know the caipirinha. It is the drink of every party, every beach day, every long lunch that turns into a long afternoon. It is bright and limey and dangerously easy to drink, made with just three humble ingredients that come together into something so much greater than the sum of its parts.

The magic is in its simplicity. There is no fancy bar cart required, just a lime, some sugar, and cachaca, which is a Brazilian spirit made from sugarcane. You muddle, you pour, you stir, you sip. It is the kind of cocktail that makes you feel like you are on vacation even when you are very much in your own backyard in Kansas City.

A little heritage note

Growing up half Brazilian, the caipirinha was always around at family gatherings, the grown ups clinking glasses while music played and someone fired up the grill for churrasco. It is genuinely the national cocktail of Brazil, and there is a real art to making it just right. The secret I learned is to muddle the limes gently. You want the juice and those fragrant oils from the peel, but if you crush the bitter white pith too hard, it throws the whole thing off. Be kind to your limes.

Want a mocktail version?

Since I am pregnant right now, I have become a bit of a mocktail expert, and the good news is a virgin caipirinha is delicious. Just muddle your lime and sugar the same way, then top with sparkling water or a splash of ginger ale instead of the cachaca. You still get that gorgeous bright lime flavor, so nobody has to feel left out of the toast. Celebratory and inclusive, the Side of Glam way.

Classic Caipirinha

The national cocktail of Brazil, made with just three things: fresh lime, sugar, and cachaca. Bright, boozy, and absolutely perfect for summer.
Prep Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes
Servings: 1 cocktail
Course: Drinks
Cuisine: Brazilian

Ingredients

  • 1 lime cut into wedges
  • 2 tsp granulated sugar or to taste
  • 2 oz cachaca
  • 1 cup crushed ice

Method

  1. Add the lime wedges and sugar to a sturdy rocks glass.
  2. Muddle gently to release the lime juice and dissolve the sugar, pressing just enough to extract the juice without crushing the pith.
  3. Fill the glass with crushed ice, then pour in the cachaca.
  4. Stir well to combine and serve immediately.

Notes

Muddle gently so you only release the juice and oils from the lime, not the bitter white pith. Cachaca is the traditional spirit, but white rum works in a pinch for a caipirinha style drink.

Saude

That is cheers in Portuguese. Whether you are making the classic or the mocktail, I hope this little three ingredient cocktail brings some warm, festive Brazilian energy to your summer. Make a round for your people and soak up the good times.

So glad you are here.
xo, Pam
