Cute baby onesies and clothing items

The Cutest Baby Clothes That Actually Hold Up in the Wash

Baby clothes are genuinely one of the most fun parts of pregnancy prep, and also one of the areas where it is the easiest to spend a lot of money on things that fall apart after three washes or that your baby outgrows before you even get to use them. I have learned to be selective.

Here is what I have found that is actually cute and actually holds up.

Primary: The Workhorse Brand

If you have not discovered Primary yet, it is going to change how you shop for baby basics. Their onesies, leggings, and footie pajamas are simple, well-made, and come in a beautiful range of solid colors. No scratchy tags, no annoying graphics that crack after five washes, just soft and functional basics. I found the Primary baby onesie sets and have been adding them to our stash. They wash beautifully and the colors stay true.

Mini Boden for the Fun Pieces

When I want something a little more special, Mini Boden is my go-to. Their prints are charming without being over the top, and the fabric quality is genuinely above average. The Mini Boden baby pieces run a little more expensive, but they are the items that still look good after the tenth wash and that get passed along to the next baby in the family in great condition.

Amazon for Bulk Basics

For the things you need in mass quantity because babies are messy and you will be doing laundry constantly, Amazon is where I shop. A good multi-pack of baby onesies in neutral colors covers your everyday rotation without breaking the budget. I also get footie pajamas in bulk from Amazon because babies live in footie pajamas and you need plenty of them.

The Sizing Reality

Do not buy too much newborn size. I cannot stress this enough. Newborn clothes fit for maybe three to six weeks if you are lucky, and many babies skip the size entirely. Load up on 0-3 and 3-6 months. That is where you will actually spend your time.

Also size up on anything that goes over the head. If a onesie says 3 months and you are thinking “that seems big,” it probably is not. Baby heads are large relative to their bodies and a onesie that fits but barely gets over the head is no fun for anyone at 3 AM.

What to Skip

Anything with a lot of buttons down the back. Anything that looks adorable on a hanger but requires more than 20 seconds to put on a squirmy baby. Shoes in any size under 12 months. They fall off immediately and serve no practical purpose. Save your money.
