The Easy Summer Outfits I Live In When Kansas City Gets Sticky

Okay, let me set the scene. It is the middle of July in Kansas City, the air feels like a warm dishrag, and I have already changed clothes twice before nine in the morning. Summer here does not mess around. By the time I load the kids and the water bottles and the one random shoe that always goes missing, I am basically wilting in the driveway.

So over the years I have quietly built a little uniform of things that keep me cool, cover the mom stuff, and still make me feel like a person who got dressed on purpose. None of it is fancy. All of it is easy. And most of it is stuff I reach for again and again once the humidity rolls in.

Heads up, some of the links below are affiliate links, which just means if you grab something I get a tiny commission at no extra cost to you. Only things I actually wear made the list.

The throw on and go dress

If I could put one thing on for my whole summer, it would be a soft flowy dress that requires zero thought. No waistband deciding my mood, no tucking, no planning. I pull it over my head, add sandals, and I look like I tried even though I very much did not.

I keep coming back to the tiered midi kind, the ones with a little swing to them so the air can actually move. They hide the iced coffee I will inevitably spill, and they go straight from school pickup to dinner on a patio. Here is the flowy tiered midi dress style I wear on repeat.

Bike shorts and a big soft tee

This is my actual mom uniform, the one I wear when the day is mostly errands and hauling. A pair of biker shorts that stay put and do not roll, plus an oversized cotton tee I can knot at the hip. Comfortable enough to sit on the splash pad ground, pulled together enough that I will happily run into someone at Costco.

The trick is the tee being genuinely soft and a little longer, so it feels intentional and not like I gave up. Some days I did give up. The tee keeps that a secret.

Linen anything, all of it

Linen is the fabric that gets it. It breathes, it looks a little expensive, and it forgives a body that has grown a whole human before. I love a pair of wide linen pants with a tank when I want to be covered but not cooked. They feel like pajamas that are allowed in public, which is the highest compliment I can give clothing.

The sandals that go with everything

I used to buy cute sandals that destroyed my feet by lunch. Not anymore. Now I want one pair of cushioned footbed sandals in a neutral that goes with every single thing above. Comfortable enough to walk the City Market on a Saturday, nice enough that I do not feel frumpy.

One good pair beats five that live in the back of the closet with the tags still on. Ask me how I know.

A swimsuit I do not have to fuss with

Pool days and the splash pad are basically our summer social calendar, so I want a suit I can chase a toddler in without a wardrobe situation. A tummy control one piece that actually stays where I put it changed the game. I can bend, lift, scoop up a crying kid, and never once think about it.

Confidence at the pool is mostly just not fidgeting with your suit the whole time. That is the boring secret nobody tells you.

The tiny beauty stuff that survives the heat

Makeup and Kansas City humidity are not friends. I have made peace with it. These days I keep it simple, a good face sunscreen SPF 50 that does not pill under everything else, and a mattifying setting spray so my face stays put through the carpool line.

By August I am basically doing tinted sunscreen, mascara, and a prayer. Plus the setting spray. Truly the only thing standing between me and a melted face by three o clock.

The takeaway

None of this is about looking put together for anyone else. It is about not fighting my clothes in ninety five degree heat while also fighting a diaper bag and a stroller wheel that refuses to turn. Easy pieces, one good pair of sandals, and a little sun protection, and suddenly summer in KC feels a lot more doable.

What are you living in this summer? Drop it in the comments, my cart always has room and my closet apparently has no limits.

xo, Pam
