Free Things to Do in Kansas City This June (the Ones We Actually Go To)

Okay, real talk for a second. Summer in Kansas City has a way of getting expensive fast. Between the patios and the festivals and the “let’s just grab ice cream” that turns into a forty dollar evening, it adds up. So every June I make myself a little list of the things that are genuinely free, the ones our family actually shows up for year after year, and I wanted to share this year’s with you.

Here is what is on our calendar for June, mom-friend to mom-friend.

Heart of America Shakespeare Festival

This one is my sentimental favorite. Every summer the festival sets up in Southmoreland Park, right by the Nelson, and puts on a full Shakespeare production completely free. This year it is Love’s Labour’s Lost, running from mid-June into early July. We pack a blanket, a cooler, and way too many snacks, get there early for a good patch of grass, and let the kids run a little wild before the show starts. There is a fun pre-show bit and a short talk, then the real performance under the stars. It feels fancy and costs us nothing but the gas to get there.

Future Stages Festival at the Kauffman Center

If you have never been inside the Kauffman Center, this is your excuse. On Sunday, June 14, the Future Stages Festival turns the whole place into a free celebration of young KC performers, more than six hundred kids ages five to eighteen across four stages. It is loud and joyful and a little chaotic in the best way, and honestly walking through that gorgeous building for free is worth the trip on its own.

Make Music Day KC

June 21 is Make Music Day, and Kansas City goes all in. We are talking well over a hundred free performances scattered across the metro, in parks, on sidewalks, outside coffee shops, in community centers. The fun of it is you do not really plan, you just wander a neighborhood and stumble into music. We usually pick one area, grab a treat, and follow our ears.

JuneteenthKC Heritage Festival

The celebration at 18th and Vine is one of the best things our city does, and it is free and made for families. Live music, an art walk, kids’ activities, food vendors, the whole district alive at once. It is a beautiful afternoon and a meaningful one, and the Jazz District itself is worth lingering in afterward.

The FIFA Fan Festival

This is the big one this summer with the World Cup coming to town. The Fan Festival is free to get into with a general admission pass, first come first served, so go early if you want in. Even if you are not a die-hard soccer family, the energy downtown is going to be unreal, and watching matches on a giant screen with a few thousand new friends is the kind of thing the kids will remember.

The free stuff that is always there

And then there are my reliable, costs-nothing standbys that I lean on when we just need to get out of the house. The Nelson-Atkins is free every single day, and the lawn with the giant shuttlecocks is basically a free playground. First Fridays in the Crossroads is free to walk, full of art and people-watching and street musicians. The City Market on a Saturday morning is free to wander even if you only come home with one peach. And the Plaza fountains plus a walk through Loose Park’s rose garden is my go-to when I want to feel like I did something nice without spending a dime.

That is our June. None of it is fancy, all of it is free, and most of it is the kind of thing that turns into “remember when” later. If you have a free KC spot our family needs to know about, tell me in the comments. I am always adding to the list.

So glad you are here. See you out there, KC.
