Getting Around Kansas City During the World Cup: Parking, Streetcar, and Sanity

Kansas City is a driving town. We love our cars and our free parking, and most days that works just fine. The World Cup is not most days. With six matches at Arrowhead and a month long Fan Festival downtown, getting around is going to take a little more strategy than usual.

Here is how I am planning to move around the city this summer without losing my mind, whether you are a local or you have visitors leaning on you for rides.

Downtown Kansas City

Ride the streetcar downtown

The KC Streetcar is free and it is genuinely the easiest way to get around downtown, especially near the Fan Festival at the WWI Museum and Union Station. On event days, skip the downtown parking hunt entirely and let the streetcar carry you. It connects a lot of the spots visitors actually want to hit.

For Arrowhead, have a real plan

The Truman Sports Complex is east of downtown and it is car country out there. Parking lots fill, traffic backs up, and you do not want to be improvising. Prepay for parking when you can, look into official park and ride options, or split a rideshare. Whatever you do, decide before you leave home.

Rideshare smarter

Surge pricing is real around big events, so build it into your budget or your patience. Right after a match, everyone requests a ride at once. Walking a few blocks away from the main exit before you request, or grabbing a bite while the crowd thins, can save you both money and a long wait.

Keep your phone alive

Your phone is your ticket, your map, your ride, and your camera all day long, and that drains a battery fast. A portable phone charger tucked in your bag is the unsung hero of any big event day. I never head downtown without one anymore.

Wear shoes you can actually walk in

Between parking, walking to gates, and exploring downtown, you will rack up steps fast. This is not the day for brand new sandals. A pair of broken in, comfortable walking sneakers will save your feet and your mood.

Give yourself buffer time

If there is one thing I want you to take from this, it is to pad every estimate. Road closures, detours, and crowds all eat into your schedule. Leaving early and arriving relaxed beats sprinting through a parking lot every single time.

The takeaway

Lean on the free streetcar downtown, have a locked in plan for Arrowhead, pack a charger, wear comfy shoes, and give yourself extra time. Do that and getting around World Cup KC becomes part of the fun instead of the stressful part.

Navigating the chaos right alongside you. xo, Pam
