Halloween Cocktails and Mocktails
This is my first Halloween party planning as a pregnant person, and I want to tell you what that has taught me. It has taught me that most mocktails are terrible. They are cranberry juice with sparkling water in a nice glass, and everyone hands you one with a bright encouraging face like they have solved something. I have had a lot of sad juice this year, is what I am saying.
So I got serious about it. The drinks below are split between real cocktails for the people drinking and non alcoholic ones that actually taste like a drink, meaning they have bitterness, acid, and some kind of body. That is the whole trick. If a mocktail is only sweet, it tastes like a kid drink in a fancy glass and everyone knows it. Batch notes included, because standing at a bar cart all night is not the vibe when your feet already hurt.
Heads up, some of these are affiliate links, which just means I get a tiny commission at no cost to you.

The Smoke and Bones (Cocktail)
My favorite thing to serve because it looks moody and takes thirty seconds. In a shaker with ice: 2 oz mezcal, 3/4 oz fresh lime juice, 1/2 oz agave syrup, and 3 dashes of Angostura bitters. Shake hard for 12 seconds and strain over one big ice cube. Express an orange peel over the top and drop it in.
Mezcal is the whole point here. It brings a campfire smokiness that reads Halloween without a single plastic spider involved. If mezcal is too much for your crowd, do half mezcal and half blanco tequila. A basic cocktail shaker set with a jigger is around twenty five dollars and it is the difference between a good drink and a guessed drink.
Poison Apple Punch (Batch Cocktail)
This is the one I make for actual parties because it lives in a dispenser and I never touch it again. For about 12 servings: 3 cups bourbon, 6 cups fresh apple cider, 1 cup fresh lemon juice, 3/4 cup maple syrup, and 2 tablespoons of Angostura bitters. Stir it all in a pitcher, refrigerate at least 4 hours, up to 2 days.
Serve over ice with thin apple slices and a cinnamon stick. Do not add the sparkling element until go time. If you want fizz, top each glass with 2 oz of ginger beer rather than dumping it in the batch, or the whole thing goes flat and syrupy within an hour. A glass drink dispenser with a spigot means guests serve themselves and you stay in the conversation.
The Green Witch (Cocktail)
Shake 1.5 oz gin, 1 oz fresh lime, 3/4 oz simple syrup, and a very packed handful of basil or mint with ice. Double strain into a chilled coupe so you do not get herb bits in your teeth. It comes out a hazy alarming green with zero food coloring, which I find much prettier than the neon stuff.
Chill your glasses in the freezer for fifteen minutes first. It sounds precious but a room temperature coupe kills a drink like this in about four minutes. A set of coupe glasses is worth having if you host at all, and they stack better than martini glasses.

Now the Mocktails, and These Are Good
Here is my rule after a year of research I did not volunteer for. A non alcoholic drink needs three things: acid, bitterness, and texture. Miss any one of them and you are drinking punch.
Spiced Cranberry Shrub Spritz
Make the shrub first. Simmer 2 cups fresh cranberries, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, 2 cinnamon sticks, 4 whole cloves, and a strip of orange peel for 12 minutes until the berries pop. Strain, press the solids, and stir 3/4 cup apple cider vinegar into the warm syrup. Cool and bottle. It keeps three weeks in the fridge.
To serve: 1.5 oz shrub, 4 oz sparkling water, big ice, orange twist. The vinegar is what makes this taste like a drink instead of juice. It is tart and grown up and I have had approximately nine hundred of them this fall.
Smoky Maple Sour, No Alcohol
This one fakes the body of a spirit. Combine 3 oz strong brewed black tea (cooled), 3/4 oz lemon juice, 1/2 oz maple syrup, 2 dashes of aromatic bitters, and a quarter teaspoon of smoked salt dissolved in a splash of hot water. Shake with ice, strain over fresh ice.
The tea gives you tannin, which is the missing texture in most mocktails. This is the single best thing I have made all year. There are also good non alcoholic aperitifs now that bring real bitterness if you want a shortcut, and one bottle will get you through the season.
Golden Hour Cider
Warm 6 cups apple cider with 3 cinnamon sticks, 1 tablespoon fresh ginger sliced, and 6 cardamom pods for 20 minutes on low. Do not boil it or it goes bitter. Add the juice of one lemon off the heat, right at the end, and it wakes up completely. Keep it in a slow cooker on warm and it is good for three hours.
Batching Timeline for a Party
- Three weeks out: make the cranberry shrub. It only gets better.
- Two days out: mix the poison apple punch base and refrigerate. Brew the black tea for the maple sours.
- Morning of: freeze a tray of large cubes, chill glassware, slice garnishes and store them in a damp paper towel.
- One hour before: cider into the slow cooker on low, punch into the dispenser, and set the mocktail station up so nobody has to ask.
What to Buy vs What You Already Own
- Already own: a pitcher, a fine mesh strainer, a peeler for citrus twists, a slow cooker.
- Worth buying: a bottle of aromatic bitters. It is around ten dollars, lasts years, and it is the ingredient doing the most work in half these drinks.
- Worth buying: a large ice cube tray. Big cubes melt slower, which matters a lot for anything served on the rocks.
- Skip: smoke guns, dry ice, and light up glasses. Fun for ten minutes, annoying for the other four hours.
What I Would Skip
Black food coloring. It stains everything, it tastes faintly chemical, and it turns your guests teeth gray in every photo. Also gummy worms hanging off glass rims, which sounds cute and ends with a sticky rim and a worm in someone’s drink.
And genuinely, skip serving only one non alcoholic option. There is usually more than one person at a party not drinking, whether they are pregnant, driving, on a medication, or just do not feel like it, and it feels really different to be handed a menu instead of a leftover. Make two. It costs you almost nothing.
Pour Something and Sit Down
Make the shrub. Even if you make nothing else on this list, make the shrub. It turned my entire pregnant fall around and I am not being dramatic, or at least not very.
So glad you are here. Pam
