Hospital Bag Must-Haves From a Mom Who Has Been There
The hospital bag is one of those things I put off packing way longer than I should have. I kept thinking I had more time, and then I had a moment around week 35 where I realized I genuinely did not know what I was doing. So I asked friends, I asked my doctor, and I did a lot of research so you do not have to.
Here is my actual list, the things that make the list because they genuinely help, not just because every checklist on the internet includes them.
For You During Labor
A robe is the item I keep hearing about over and over, and I finally understand why. You want something you can actually move around in, that opens easily for monitoring and nursing, and that feels like yours rather than a hospital gown. I found a labor and delivery robe that is soft, has snaps for easy access, and photographs well for the delivery room moments you will actually want to remember. Worth it.
Bring your own pillow from home if you can. Hospital pillows are not great. A familiar pillow matters more than you might expect when you are exhausted and trying to rest between contractions.
Postpartum Essentials for the Hospital Stay
The hospital will give you some postpartum supplies, but their mesh underwear and pads are pretty basic. I am bringing my own heavy postpartum pads because I want the ones I actually chose. I am also packing nipple cream because if I am going to try nursing, I want to start right away with the good stuff on hand.
A nursing bra or two is also going in the bag. I have a wireless nursing bra that is comfortable enough to sleep in and functional enough for the first days of figuring out feeding. Soft, no underwire, clip-down front. That is what you want.
For Baby
The hospital provides almost everything for baby while you are there, which I did not realize at first. You mostly just need a going-home outfit and a car seat. That is genuinely it. Pack one or two backup onesies in case of a blowout, but do not overpack the baby section.
Search for a newborn going-home outfit
that you love, because you will look at those photos forever. Ours is already picked out and I am not going to tell you what it is yet because I want it to be a surprise.
For Your Support Person
Pack snacks for your partner or support person. The hospital cafeteria keeps weird hours and labor does not follow a schedule. Put some granola bars and something salty in a bag and throw it in. They will thank you, and honestly so will you when they are not disappearing to find food at a critical moment.
Things to Leave Home
Your full makeup kit. A hair dryer. More than two outfit changes for yourself. Books you think you will read during labor. You will not read a book during labor. I promise.
The bag does not need to be huge. Focus on comfort, function, and the few things that will make you feel like yourself during a very overwhelming experience.
What was in your hospital bag that you could not have lived without? Tell me in the comments, I am still finalizing my list.
