How to Layer Rugs (and Why It Actually Works)
Layering rugs looked intimidating to me for a long time. Like something you needed a design degree for. Then I tried it and realized it is actually one of the easiest ways to add warmth, texture, and personality to a room. And it works in almost any space.
Here is the simple approach I use every time.
Start With a Large Neutral Base Rug
The foundation rug should be large enough that the front legs of all your furniture can sit on it. A jute, sisal, or simple low-pile rug in a neutral tone works perfectly. It grounds the room without competing with anything. Large jute rugs on Amazon.
Layer a Smaller Statement Rug on Top
The second rug is where you bring in personality. A vintage-style rug, a patterned kilim, a bold geometric, or a plush shag. It sits centered on top of the base rug and overlaps it by a comfortable amount on each side. The two together create depth and visual interest that a single rug just cannot. Why It Works
Layering adds texture and dimension. It also lets you get more use out of a smaller statement rug that might not be big enough to stand alone in a room. And it gives you the ability to swap out the top layer seasonally without replacing the whole setup.
A Jute and Wool Combo Is Classic
My favorite combination is a natural fiber base like jute or sisal with a wool or cotton rug on top. The textures contrast beautifully and the natural fiber base keeps things grounded. Rugs USA and similar stores through ShopMy have excellent jute options.
Keep the Rug Pad Underneath Everything
This is non-negotiable. A rug pad prevents slipping, protects your floors, and makes both rugs feel more cushioned and substantial. Get one sized for your base rug. Non-slip rug pads on Amazon.
Sizes That Work Well Together
A common combination is an 8×10 or 9×12 base rug with a 5×8 on top. Or a 6×9 base with a 4×6 on top. The key is that the top rug should be noticeably smaller than the base so both are clearly visible. At least six to eight inches of the base should show around all sides of the top rug.
Give layered rugs a try the next time you want to refresh a room. It is one of those moves that makes people ask if you redecorated even though you mostly just added one rug to what you had. Tell me in the comments if you have tried rug layering and how it went for you.
So glad you are here. Pam
