Things to Do in Kansas City in September 2026
The second the calendar flips to September, Kansas City turns into the version of itself I like best. The humidity finally takes a hint, the evenings get that soft gold light, and every single weekend has three things happening at once. I am not complaining. I am just saying my calendar looks unhinged right now.
So I sat down and sorted through what is actually going on around the metro this September, dates and all, because I got tired of hearing about a festival the Monday after it ended. Here is the list I am working from.

Kansas City Irish Fest, September 4 to 6
Crown Center, Labor Day weekend, and roughly a million people who are suddenly very Irish. Irish Fest runs Friday the 4th from 5 to 11 p.m., Saturday the 5th from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday the 6th from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. There is music on multiple stages, dancers, food, and yes, whiskey.
My honest tip: go earlier in the day if you have little ones. The afternoon crowd is manageable and the kid programming is genuinely good. After about 7 p.m. it turns into a very different party.
SantaCaliGon Days, September 4 to 7
Over in Independence, SantaCaliGon takes over the square for the whole Labor Day weekend, and it is free. The name is a mashup of Santa Fe, California, and Oregon, because Independence was the jumping off point for all three trails. There are vendors, carnival rides, and food that I will absolutely regret and absolutely eat again.
This is one of those events that feels like small town Missouri and a big city festival at the same time. Wear real shoes. The square is all brick.
The KC Renaissance Festival Opens September 5
Ren Fest is back out in Bonner Springs starting Saturday, September 5, running Saturdays and Sundays through October 18, plus Labor Day Monday on the 7th and Columbus Day Monday on October 12. Opening weekend is High Seas Adventure Weekend, which means pirates, which means my kid is going to lose it.
Early September at Ren Fest can still be genuinely hot, so if you are heat sensitive, the late September and October dates are much kinder.
Taste of Kansas City, September 7
Monday, September 7, at Harris Park. A bunch of KC restaurants in one place, which is the most efficient possible way to eat your way through a city you already live in. If you have been meaning to try somewhere and never got around to booking it, this is your shortcut.

Two Chiefs Home Games at Arrowhead
The home opener is Monday night, September 14, against Denver. Then the Chiefs host the Colts on September 20 before heading out on the road. Two home games in one month is a good problem to have, and even if you are not going, the whole city has a different energy on a home game weekend.
If you are not a tickets person, honestly a parking lot tailgate invite or a good patio is a perfectly respectable way to participate.
Camp Leavenworth, September 18 to 19
A free street festival in Leavenworth, Kansas with national music acts, fireworks, and food trucks. It is about a 45 minute drive from most of the metro, which sounds far until you realize you have driven that far for a Target run.
Blue Springs Fall Fun Festival, September 18 to 20
The 57th annual Fall Fun Festival brings over 200 vendor booths, live entertainment, carnival rides, a car show, and a beer garden to downtown Blue Springs. This is the one I file under classic hometown fall. If you want the funnel cake and the school marching band and the kettle corn experience, this is it.
Jesse James Festival in Kearney, September 12 and 18 to 20
Kearney, Missouri does the Jesse James Festival with a parade, a carnival, and a fishing tournament, spread across September 12 and then the weekend of the 18th through the 20th. It is a bit of a drive north, but the parade is the kind of thing that makes kids feel like they are in a movie.
Plaza Art Fair, September 25 to 27
The Plaza Art Fair closes out the month and it is my personal favorite. Nine blocks of the Country Club Plaza get handed over to artists, live music, and food. Hours are Friday the 25th from 5 to 9 p.m., Saturday the 26th from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday the 27th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
I go on Sunday. Smaller crowds, easier parking, and the artists are usually more willing to actually chat about their work when they are not four people deep. Bring a tote, wear something you can walk nine blocks in, and set a budget you will then ignore.

How I Am Actually Picking
I have learned the hard way that I cannot do a festival every single weekend and still be a functional person on Monday. So my rule now is one big thing per weekend, and one of those weekends is a nothing weekend on purpose.
For me that looks like Irish Fest over Labor Day, one Ren Fest Saturday in late September when it cools off, and the Plaza Art Fair on that last Sunday. Everything else is a bonus if the day feels right.
The Takeaway
September in Kansas City is the good stuff. It is patio weather, it is festival season, and it is the last stretch before everything goes full pumpkin. Double check dates and hours before you head out, because rain and lineups shift things, but this list should get your calendar started.
Which one are you doing? Tell me in the comments, I genuinely want to know if I am missing something good.
xo, Pam
