A Local’s Weekend Itinerary for World Cup Visitors in Kansas City

If you are flying into Kansas City for a World Cup match and you have a weekend to work with, let me play tour guide. I put together the exact long weekend I would map out for a friend, balanced so you see the city, eat well, catch the match, and do not run yourself into the ground.

Adjust it around your match day, but this is the rhythm that makes for a really good KC weekend.

Downtown Kansas City

Friday: ease in and eat

Land, drop your bags downtown or in the Crossroads, and start slow. Grab a late lunch at a classic barbecue joint so you can check that box early. Spend the afternoon wandering the Crossroads galleries and shops, then have dinner at one of the neighborhood’s buzzy restaurants. If it is a First Friday, you lucked out, just follow the crowd.

Friday night: the Fan Festival

Head to the FIFA Fan Festival on the south lawn of the WWI Museum to get your first taste of the tournament energy. Even if your match is another day, watching a game on that giant screen with the skyline behind you is the perfect welcome to the weekend.

Saturday: see the city

Start with breakfast or a coffee in the River Market, then hit the City Market if it is a market morning. Spend midday at the Nelson-Atkins or the WWI Museum, then stroll the Country Club Plaza in the afternoon. Cap it with a relaxed dinner and a cocktail somewhere with a patio, because summer evenings here are made for it.

Match day: pace yourself

On match day, keep the morning light. A good breakfast, plenty of water, and a slow start, because the match itself is a marathon of standing, cheering, and heat. Get to Arrowhead early for the atmosphere, then ride the high all the way through the final whistle. Celebrate after with the rest of the city.

Sunday: jazz and a slow goodbye

If your flight allows, end with a leisurely brunch and a visit to the 18th and Vine Jazz District. The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the American Jazz Museum are a meaningful, only in KC way to close out the trip before you head to the airport.

A couple of planning notes

Build in rest and air conditioning, because the heat sneaks up on you. Use the free streetcar downtown to skip parking headaches. And do not over schedule, the best KC moments tend to be the unplanned patio hours and the conversations with fans from across the world.

The takeaway

A great World Cup weekend in Kansas City mixes barbecue, art, jazz, a little downtown nightlife, and of course the match, all at a pace that lets you actually enjoy it. Come ready to eat, cheer, and slow down a bit. We will take good care of you.

Wishing you the best weekend here. xo, Pam
