The Lamps That Changed How My Living Room Feels
I spent years thinking the overhead light in my living room was the problem. It was too bright, too harsh, and made everything look like a waiting room. I tried dimmer switches. I tried different bulbs. Nothing helped until I just stopped using it entirely and switched to lamps.
Adding two table lamps and a floor lamp to my living room changed the feel of that space more than any furniture or decor purchase I have ever made. Here is what I learned.
Overhead Light Is Almost Never Your Friend
Most overhead lights cast a flat, unflattering light that washes out a room. Lamps create pools of warm light at eye level, which is how candlelight works and why restaurants that use it feel so good. Once you start layering lamps you will not want to go back.
The Arc Floor Lamp
An arc floor lamp that arches over a sofa or reading chair is one of the best lamp investments you can make. It gives you task lighting without a table, it looks incredibly stylish, and it defines a sitting area in a room. West Elm has beautiful versions through ShopMy. Amazon also has great affordable arc lamps. Arc floor lamps on Amazon.
Two Matching Table Lamps
Two matching lamps on either side of a sofa or on a console table instantly make a room look more designed. They do not have to be expensive. I have a pair from Amazon that look like they came from a boutique. Table lamp sets on Amazon.
The Bulb Matters as Much as the Lamp
Use warm white bulbs, around 2700K color temperature. Cool or daylight bulbs turn a cozy space into a fluorescent nightmare. Dimmable bulbs are even better because you can adjust the light level for different times of day. Warm white dimmable bulbs on Amazon.
A Plug-In Sconce for Drama
If you want to add a light somewhere without wiring, plug-in sconces are the answer. They mount on the wall and the cord runs down behind furniture. They look like hardwired fixtures and add so much atmosphere. Plug-in sconces on Amazon.
Layer Your Light Sources
The goal is to have multiple light sources in the room at different heights. Floor lamp, table lamps, maybe some candles or a string of warm bistro lights. When you layer light sources the room feels warm, dimensional, and intentional instead of flat.
Lighting is the most underrated design element in a home. If your space feels off and you cannot figure out why, start with the lighting. It will change everything. Tell me in the comments what your current living room lighting situation looks like.
So glad you are here. Pam
