Last Minute Halloween Costumes from Your Own Closet

It is October 30th at 9pm and you have just learned about a party, or a school thing, or your neighbor’s annual driveway situation that you forgot was annual. I have been here more times than I would like to admit. One year I remembered a work Halloween thing while I was already in the car, in the parking lot, watching a coworker walk in dressed as a full sized traffic cone.

So this is the post I wish I had bookmarked. Every single one of these comes out of a normal closet, takes under twenty minutes, and does not require a single trip to a store that is already sold out of everything but adult sized wings. I have ranked them roughly by how little effort they take, and I have been honest about which ones people will actually recognize, because a costume nobody gets is just an outfit you have to explain all night.

Heads up, some of these are affiliate links, which just means I get a tiny commission at no cost to you.

1. Tourist

The easiest one and the most reliably recognized. Loud printed shirt, shorts or khakis, white socks pulled up, sneakers, sunglasses on the back of your head, and a camera or your phone on a lanyard. If you have a fanny pack, wear it. If you have a sun hat, absolutely wear it.

Print out a map or grab a paper one from a glove compartment and hold it upside down. That single detail is what turns it from an outfit into a bit. This works at every kind of party and takes about four minutes.

2. Cat

Yes it is the oldest one in the book. It is also all black clothing you already own plus eyeliner. Draw a small triangle on your nose and three whiskers on each cheek. Slick your hair back. If you have no ears, skip them, the makeup carries it.

Recognition is a hundred percent. Effort is about six minutes. It is warm because it is just your clothes. This is the one I fall back on and I am not sorry.

3. The Riveter

A denim shirt or chambray button down, sleeves rolled tight above the elbow, a red bandana or scarf tied around your head with a knot in front, and red lipstick. Pin your hair up underneath.

This is genuinely one of the best looking closet costumes and people recognize the silhouette immediately. Warm, comfortable, no props to lose. If you do not own a red bandana, any solid red fabric strip works, including a scarf or a cut up t shirt.

4. Statue

Everything white, gray, or beige, head to toe. Add a dusting of baby powder or cornstarch on your hair and any exposed skin. Stand very still at strategic moments.

Honest downside, the powder gets on everything and everyone, including whatever couch you sit on. This is a party costume, not a walking around a neighborhood costume. But it is free and it is funny, and if you commit to the standing still bit you will be the most memorable person there.

5. Off Duty Something

This is my favorite category because it is entirely built out of laziness. Wear normal comfortable clothes plus one single identifying item, and describe yourself as off duty. Off duty pirate, one gold hoop and a striped shirt. Off duty cowboy, boots and a hat with sweatpants. Off duty ballerina, a bun and leg warmers.

People find it funnier than a full costume, and you are comfortable all night. This is the correct answer if you are tired, cold, or pregnant, which this year I am all three.

6. Golfer

Polo, khakis or a pleated skirt, a visor or a cap, high socks. If you have a golf glove, wear it on one hand. Carry a single club if you have one, and if you do not, nobody will notice.

Recognition is high and it is completely comfortable. This one is very good for a cold night since you can layer a quarter zip and it still reads correctly.

7. Ghost

A white sheet, two eye holes. That is the whole thing and it is still funny after all these years, particularly on an adult in a room of people who spent money on their costumes.

The real notes: use a flat sheet not a fitted one, cut the eye holes way bigger than feels right, and hem the bottom above your ankles so you do not go down someone’s porch stairs. Visibility is bad enough that I would not wear this walking on a street at night.

8. Overdressed for the Occasion

Put on the fanciest thing you own, a gown, a sequin dress, a tux if you have one, and just be a person who is extremely overdressed. Tell people you are going as your own high expectations, or a wedding guest who got the date wrong.

Zero effort, and you get to wear the nice thing that has been hanging in your closet since 2019 waiting for an occasion.

Your Twenty Minute Closet Triage

  • Minute 1 to 3: pull every all black and every all white item you own onto the bed. Most closet costumes start from a monochrome base.
  • Minute 3 to 6: check for the four high value pieces, a denim shirt, a loud printed shirt, a trench coat, and a plain hoodie. Each one unlocks several costumes.
  • Minute 6 to 10: raid accessories. Sunglasses, bandanas, hats, lanyards, belts, and jewelry do more work than clothing does.
  • Minute 10 to 15: makeup. Eyeliner alone gets you a cat, a mustache, or freckles. Powder gets you a statue or a ghost of anything.
  • Minute 15 to 20: the sanity check. Can you sit down in it, walk in it, and go to the bathroom in it? If not, pick a different one. This step has saved me twice.

What I Would Skip

Anything held together with safety pins in a load bearing way. I once made a toga out of a bedsheet and spent the entire evening with one arm pressed against my side. It was not a good night and I have thought about it many times since.

Also skip costumes that require an explanation. If you have to say a sentence before people get it, you are going to say that sentence forty times, and by the tenth time you will be over it. Recognition matters more than cleverness on a last minute costume.

And skip drawing on your face with anything that is not actual makeup. Marker does not come off. I know someone who went to a Monday morning meeting with a faint mustache and she has not lived it down.

You Have Enough Already

Genuinely, you probably already own three costumes. The point of the night is showing up, not the outfit. Grab the denim shirt, tie the bandana, and go have a good time.

So glad you are here. Pam
