Newborn Must-Haves That Are Genuinely Worth It
There is so much noise around what newborns “need” that it becomes almost impossible to know what is actually going to matter and what is just marketing. I have done a lot of research, talked to a lot of moms, and made a list of the things that come up again and again as genuinely worth it versus the things that sound great but end up collecting dust.
If you are building out your registry or your shopping list, start here.
The Sound Machine
This is the thing I hear about most consistently. Babies are used to noise from the womb, and the idea that they need total silence to sleep is actually backwards. A good white noise machine is not a luxury, it is one of the most practical purchases you can make. The Hatch Rest sound machine is the one I keep hearing about because it also works as a night light and you can control it from your phone without going into the room. That is going on our registry.
Quality Swaddles
Not all swaddles are created equal. The muslin ones look cute but if they do not actually hold, they are not doing anything useful. I went with Aden and Anais swaddles which have a great reputation for being soft and actually staying put. Buy more than you think you need. Seriously.
The Frida Baby Kit
If you are not familiar with Frida Baby, they make the tools for all the unsexy but necessary parts of newborn care. Specifically the NoseFrida (I know, I know, but every parent swears by it) and the nail file because newborn nails are terrifyingly sharp and clippers feel scary at first. The Frida Baby kit bundles the essentials and is a great gift or registry add.
A Good Swaddle That Actually Stays
Beyond the muslin squares, a zip-up swaddle for the middle of the night when you are exhausted and cannot remember how to fold anything is a lifesaver. Something like the Love to Dream swaddle that keeps arms up and does not require any technique at 3 AM.
What Is Probably Skippable
The Snoo is incredible, and if you have the budget and someone gifts it or rents it for you, go for it. But at $1,600 to buy, it is not a must-have for every family. A good bassinet and a consistent routine can get you there too. Do not let anyone make you feel like you are doing it wrong if you skip it.
Wipe warmers, elaborate bottle sterilizing setups that take up your entire counter, and anything that requires a lot of assembly during a middle-of-the-night feeding are all things I am personally skipping or approaching with extreme skepticism.
The Bottom Line
A sound machine, good swaddles, the Frida kit, and a few solid burp cloths will get you through more of the newborn stage than almost anything else. Start there and add as you learn what your specific baby needs.
What was the one newborn item you could not have survived without? Leave it in the comments. I am genuinely taking notes for this final stretch.

So glad you are here. xo, Pam
