How I Am Setting Up the Nursery on a Budget
When I started planning the nursery I had a vision. Soft neutrals, a beautiful crib, one of those dreamy vintage-style rockers, art on the wall, a little library corner. Then I looked at the price tags and had a very different vision, which was me sitting on the floor eating crackers and reconsidering my choices.
We are doing this on a real budget. That does not mean it cannot be beautiful, it just means I have had to get strategic. Here is what I have learned.
Start With the Non-Negotiables
The crib and the mattress are where you do not cut corners. Baby will spend a lot of time in that crib and safety is the priority. You do not have to spend a fortune, there are solid options in the $150-$250 range, but do not go so cheap that you are questioning the integrity of the frame at 2 AM.
For the rest of the furniture, I was surprised by what I found on Facebook Marketplace. A dresser in great condition from a family whose kids are grown, cleaned up and maybe repainted, can look exactly as good as a brand new one from a baby store for a fraction of the price.
Where I Splurged (Intentionally)
The one place I decided to spend more was the glider. I am going to be sitting in that chair for hours, sometimes in the middle of the night, and I wanted to actually be comfortable. I found one at Pottery Barn Kids that was on sale and I used a coupon code on top of it. Still more than I originally planned, but I am not going to regret that purchase.
Amazon for Organization
The inside of the dresser, the changing table caddy, the little baskets on the bookshelf: all Amazon. Nursery organizers are one category where you genuinely do not need to spend much. Neutral bins, drawer dividers, a simple caddy for diaper supplies. These make the room functional and they can all be found for under $30 total if you are intentional.
I also got a soft nightlight from Amazon for about $15 that does exactly what we need. It dims down, it does not disrupt sleep, and it is cute enough that it belongs in the room during the day too.
The Decorating Strategy
I picked a simple neutral palette: cream, sage green, and a warm wood tone. This means everything goes together and I am not locked into one theme that baby will outgrow. A few framed prints, one statement piece of wall decor, and plants that I definitely will not kill (hi, a snake plant in the corner).
The rule I gave myself: if it does not serve a purpose or make me genuinely happy to look at it, it does not go in the room. That helped a lot with the impulse buys.
The Honest Truth About Nursery Budgets
You can absolutely put together a functional, beautiful nursery for under $1,000, and probably under $700 if you are willing to shop secondhand and be patient. The key is knowing where the baby actually needs quality (crib, mattress, car seat) and where you can pull back (decorative items, furniture you can find used).
I would love to see how you set up your space. If you have nursery budget tips I have not thought of, please share them in the comments.
