Postpartum Recovery Essentials Nobody Talks About Enough
Postpartum recovery is one of those subjects that everyone kind of dances around. You hear a lot about labor and delivery, a lot about feeding, a lot about newborn sleep, but the actual physical recovery of the person who just had a baby is somehow treated like a footnote. I am not doing that here.
Whether you have a vaginal birth or a c-section, your body has been through something significant and you deserve actual support for that recovery, not just a “you will be fine” and a pamphlet on your way out the door.
The Frida Mom Kit Is Not Optional
The Frida Mom Postpartum Recovery Kit is the thing I hear moms talk about with genuine relief and gratitude. It includes the upside-down peri bottle (life changing for the first week), the mesh underwear that actually fits, and the perineal cooling pads. Get this. Pack it in your hospital bag. Do not wait.
Postpartum Ice Packs
The hospital will give you some, but having your own at home for the first few days matters. The disposable perineal ice packs you can find on Amazon are easy to use and help so much with swelling and discomfort in those early days. Buy a box before baby comes so they are waiting for you at home.
A Postpartum Support Belt
For both vaginal and c-section recoveries, a belly wrap or support belt can help with comfort and that loose, unsupported feeling that hits after delivery. I found a postpartum support wrap that is adjustable and designed to wear comfortably under clothes. It is not magic but it helps, and it helps you feel a little more put together on days when that matters.
Snacks That Are Actually Good
If you are nursing, you are hungry basically all the time. Having snacks in your house that are actually nutritious and do not require preparation is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Nuts, energy bars, dried fruit, easy crackers. I am pre-stocking a small snack basket for my bedside so I have something to grab during night feeds without going to the kitchen.
The Things Nobody Told Me to Expect
The night sweats. The hair loss around three months postpartum. The emotional waves that hit at unexpected moments. These are all normal and they are all things you might not be warned about. They are not permanent and they do not mean something is wrong. They are just part of the recovery that does not make it into the pretty parenting content.
Be patient with your body. It grew a whole person. Give it actual time and actual support.
What helped you most in postpartum recovery? Tell me in the comments. This is a space where we can be real about it.
