Festive spiced hot chocolate mug topped with whipped cream

Spiced Hot Chocolate with Whipped Cream

On a cold winter evening when the whole house smells like cinnamon and chocolate, there is truly nothing better than wrapping your hands around a mug of this Spiced Hot Chocolate with Whipped Cream. It is rich and velvety with real dark chocolate, warming spices like cinnamon and cardamom, and just the faintest whisper of cayenne that makes it impossible to put down. This is not the packet stuff. This is the real deal, the kind of hot chocolate that makes you want to sit by the window with a good book and never move.

I started making this version a few winters ago after a trip to a little chocolate cafe and I have never gone back to the powdered mix. The combination of cocoa powder AND chopped dark chocolate gives it this incredible depth and body that is just on a completely different level. (This post contains affiliate links. 5. While the hot chocolate heats, whip heavy cream and powdered sugar to soft peaks.
  6. Pour hot chocolate into mugs. Top generously with whipped cream and a dusting of cinnamon.

Notes

Use the best quality cocoa or chocolate you can find. Dutch-process cocoa gives a deeper, less acidic chocolate flavor. Adjust cayenne to your heat preference.

What Makes This Hot Chocolate Special

The spice blend is the real magic here. Cinnamon gives warmth, cardamom adds a floral, slightly citrusy note that elevates the chocolate in a really unexpected way, and the tiny pinch of cayenne does not make it spicy exactly, it just makes the chocolate flavor bloom on your tongue. You taste it as a lingering warmth rather than actual heat. It is the kind of thing that makes people say “there is something in this, what is it?” and then never want regular hot chocolate again.

Tips for the Creamiest Hot Chocolate

Use whole milk for the richest result. You can substitute oat milk for a dairy-free version and it actually works beautifully with the spices. Chop your dark chocolate finely so it melts quickly and evenly into the hot milk without any lumps. A good milk frother is incredibly helpful here for getting the hot chocolate silky smooth and frothy before pouring.

For the whipped cream, cold heavy cream whips up in under two minutes with a hand mixer. Stop at soft peaks so it stays billowy and melts gently into the hot chocolate as you drink it. A final dusting of cinnamon over the top is the finishing touch that makes it look completely stunning and takes two seconds.

Make It Your Own

Stir a tablespoon of peanut butter into your mug for a chocolate peanut butter hot cocoa that tastes like a melted Reese’s cup. Add a shot of espresso to make a mocha version that is perfect for a slow Saturday morning. For an adult version, a splash of Baileys, Kahlua, or even a little bourbon stirred in is absolutely dreamy. Top with crushed candy cane during the holidays or a drizzle of caramel sauce for something truly decadent.

The Final Sip

This Spiced Hot Chocolate is the kind of drink that turns an ordinary cold evening into something that feels genuinely cozy and special. It is warmth in a mug, comfort in every sip, and proof that taking five extra minutes to make something from scratch is almost always worth it. Make a big pot and share it with the people you love most. Or keep it all for yourself. I will not judge. xo, Pam
