Strawberry banana smoothie bowl topped with fresh berries and granola

Strawberry Banana Smoothie Bowl

I went through a whole phase where I was convinced smoothie bowls were just a wellness influencer thing and not worth the extra step of putting it in a bowl. I was wrong. Very wrong. The bowl format changes everything, you actually slow down and eat it instead of gulping it on the way out the door, and the toppings make it feel like a real breakfast.

This strawberry banana version is my go-to. It is thick, sweet, bright pink, and comes together in five minutes with stuff I almost always have in my freezer. The key is keeping it seriously thick so it holds up under all those toppings without turning into soup.

Tips for a Smoothie Bowl That Actually Works

Frozen fruit only for the base. Fresh fruit makes it too thin and runny. Use the least amount of liquid possible, you can always add more but you cannot take it out. A high-powered blender helps a lot here, stop and scrape down the sides a few times. The fun part is the toppings, I like granola for crunch, fresh fruit for freshness, and chia seeds if I want to feel extra virtuous. Eat it right away before it starts to melt, this is not a meal you save for later.

  • 1/4 cup milk or non-dairy milk plus more as needed

  • fresh berries, for topping
  • banana slices, for topping
  • chia seeds or coconut flakes, for topping optional

Method

  1. Add frozen strawberries, frozen banana, Greek yogurt, and milk to a blender.
  2. Blend until thick and smooth, scraping down the sides as needed. Add milk one tablespoon at a time only if necessary to blend. Keep it very thick.
  3. Pour into a bowl and smooth the top with a spoon.
  4. Add your toppings: granola, fresh berries, banana slices, and anything else you love. Serve immediately.

Notes

Use frozen fruit for the thickest, creamiest base. Add liquid very gradually so it stays thick enough to eat with a spoon.
