Summer Makeup That Stays On in the Humidity
Kansas City summers are not for the faint of heart. The humidity hits and suddenly your perfectly blended foundation has migrated somewhere it was never meant to go. I have spent a lot of summers testing products and figuring out what actually holds up when the heat is real, and I finally have a routine that keeps my makeup in place from morning through evening.
Here is what I use and why each piece matters for humid weather specifically.
Start with a Pore-Filling Primer
The base you build your makeup on matters so much more in summer. I swear by the e.l.f. Power Grip Primer because it grips everything and does not let go. If you want a higher-end option, the Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer works similarly. Either way, a good tacky primer is non-negotiable in humidity. Grab the e.l.f. version on Amazon if you want to start with the affordable option.
Waterproof or Sweat-Proof Foundation
Not all foundations are created equal for summer. I look for formulas specifically labeled waterproof or long-wear. The L’Oreal Infallible 24HR Fresh Wear Foundation is one of my go-tos because it genuinely does not budge, even when I am sweating through a school pickup. You can find it at drugstores or on Amazon.
Waterproof Mascara: Benefit They’re Real
Regular mascara in humidity is a disaster waiting to happen. Benefit They’re Real Mascara is waterproof and it does not flake, smear, or come off unless you actually remove it. It lengthens and adds volume and it holds up through heat, sweat, and the occasional afternoon rain. Get it at Sephora or through Amazon.
Waterproof Liner That Does Not Disappear
I used to think I just could not wear liner in summer. Turns out I was using the wrong formula. The NYX Epic Wear Liner Sticks are waterproof, come in tons of shades, and truly do not move. I wear black on most days but the brown and colored options are fun too. Check Amazon for all the shades.
Setting Powder for Oil Control
If you tend to get shiny in heat, a finely milled setting powder is your best friend. Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder is the gold standard and it photographs beautifully. If you want a more affordable option, the Wet n Wild Photo Focus Powder does a surprisingly good job. Set your T-zone and any areas that tend to shine and you will look much more polished all day. The Laura Mercier version is available at Amazon.
Setting Spray: The Most Important Step
This is the step that holds everything together. Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray is the one I keep coming back to for serious staying power. Spray it on at the end of your routine, let it dry, and your makeup is locked in. On really hot days I will do a second light mist after being outside for a bit to refresh everything. It is available at Sephora and also on Amazon.
One More Tip
Keep a small setting spray or facial mist in your bag for midday touch-ups. You do not need to reapply foundation if you have the right base and a refreshing mist. It will revive your look without adding heaviness.
