What to Do in Kansas City the Rest of June 2026
We are halfway through June and I keep catching myself saying the same thing every summer, which is wow, this went fast. The pool just opened, the kids are finally in a groove, and suddenly there are only a couple of weeks left before July sneaks up on us. So this is your gentle nudge, friend. Kansas City is putting on a really good last half of June, and most of it costs you nothing but a tank of gas and the willingness to stay out past bedtime.
Here is what I am actually planning to do, plus a couple I am talking my mom into. Pull up a chair.
Shakespeare under the stars at Southmoreland Park
If you have never done the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival, this is your year. It is in its 34th season, it runs through July 5 at Southmoreland Park near the Nelson, and the whole thing is free. This summer they are doing Macbeth, which sounds intense, and it is, but watching it outside on a blanket with the sky going pink behind the stage hits completely different than reading it in tenth grade English.
My move is to get there early, claim a patch of grass, and let the kids run a little before it starts. There is a pre-show put on by the festival’s teen troupe that is genuinely fun, so even the squirmy ones have something to watch. Bring a blanket, bring snacks, bring a sweater because the grass gets cool once the sun is down.

Juneteenth in the 18th and Vine Jazz District
JuneteenthKC takes over the historic 18th and Vine Jazz District on June 19 and 20, and it is one of those days where the whole city feels like it shows up. There is music, food, local artists and makers, and so much history packed into those few blocks. This year the lineup is headlined by Common, which is a pretty big deal for a free community celebration.
If you have little ones, mornings tend to be calmer and easier to navigate before the crowds build in the afternoon. And if you have never spent real time in the Jazz District, this is the perfect excuse. The American Jazz Museum and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum are right there, and they turn a fun day into a meaningful one.
The Lenexa BBQ Battle
I will be honest, I mostly go to barbecue competitions for the smell. The Lenexa BBQ Battle lands June 26 and 27 at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park, and teams compete in seven categories including brisket, pork ribs, chicken, and sausage. Watching pitmasters fuss over their smokers like proud parents is half the entertainment.
It is family friendly, there is usually live music, and the kids can burn energy at the park while you stand around inhaling hickory smoke and pretending you could ever cook like that. You cannot. I cannot. That is what these guys are for.

Catch the KC Diamonds
Kansas City got its first professional softball team this year, the KC Diamonds, part of the brand new Professional Softball League. I love a fresh team in town because the energy is so genuine, the tickets are reasonable, and the games are quick enough that you can actually bring kids without it turning into a four hour ordeal. If you have a daughter who plays, take her. Seeing women at the top of their sport up close does something that no pep talk from mom ever could.
Or just say yes to a regular summer night
Not everything has to be an event. Some of my favorite June nights are the unplanned ones, an after dinner walk for ice cream, the windows down on the way home, the kids sticky and happy in the back seat. The festivals are wonderful, but the calm is in the little things too. If all you do this month is sit on the porch a little longer, that counts.
The takeaway
June in Kansas City is generous if you let it be. Pick one thing off this list, put it on the calendar before the days slip away, and let the rest be easy. And if you make it to one of these, come back and tell me how it went, because I am always looking for the next reason to stay out a little later.
xo, Pam
