Toddler-Proofing Your Home Before Baby Arrives
When you are expecting a new baby and you already have a toddler at home, the prep work looks a little different. You are not just setting up for a newborn, you are also making sure your toddler is set up for a major transition and that your home can safely handle both of them at the same time.
This is the list of things I have been working through to make our home ready for a toddler and a newborn living in it simultaneously. It is a different kind of prep than pure baby-proofing, and I think it is worth talking about specifically.
Give the Toddler More Independence Ahead of Time
One of the best things you can do before baby arrives is help your toddler become more self-sufficient in the ways they are developmentally ready for. A good toddler step stool in the bathroom and kitchen lets them wash their hands and reach things themselves without needing you every single time. When you have a newborn in your arms, those moments of toddler independence become precious.
Organize Their Spaces So They Can Help Themselves
Toy bins they can access and put things back in themselves. A low hook for their own bag or backpack. Snack options they can reach in the pantry or fridge for the age-appropriate ones. Setting up their environment for more independence now means less frustration for everyone once baby is here. Toddler storage and organization that is at their height and labeled simply makes a real difference.
Cabinet and Door Locks Throughout
A toddler who was not interested in certain cabinets before may suddenly become very interested once a new baby is bringing new things into the house. Go through the whole house now and install cabinet locks on anything that needs them. Cleaning supplies, medications, anything sharp. Do not assume your toddler will stay uninterested in things they ignored before.
Protect the Newborn Space
A baby gate on the nursery door gives you a way to keep the toddler out of the baby space when you need to, without making it feel like a punishment. It is also useful for keeping the toddler out during naps and nighttime sleep. The Safety 1st Easy Install gate goes up quickly and is sturdy enough for consistent daily use.
Plan for the Adjustment
The toddler is going to have feelings about this new person. That is completely normal and it is worth reading a few books about welcoming a sibling ahead of the arrival. Prepare them gently and give them a role, even a small one, in welcoming the baby. Kids do better with transitions when they feel included rather than displaced.
Stock Your Toddler Snack Situation
Have easy toddler snacks accessible and ready so that when the newborn needs you, your toddler can get something to eat without a full production. Fruit pouches, crackers, cheese sticks in the fridge at their level. Small things that give you a few minutes when you need them.
