What to Wear When It Is Still Ninety Degrees and the Calendar Says Fall

It is the last week of August in Kansas City, the heat index said something insulting yesterday, and Target has been selling flannel since roughly the Fourth of July. Monday morning I stood in my closet holding a sweater, sweating, wanting so badly for it to be fall that I almost put it on anyway.

I did not. I have learned. Here is the thing nobody tells you about this exact stretch of the year: you do not dress for fall in late August. You dress for the actual weather and you let fall show up in the colors instead.

Heads up, a few of the links below are affiliate links, which just means I get a tiny commission at no cost to you. I only link things I would actually put on my own body.

The one rule that fixes all of this

Fall colors, summer fabrics. That is the whole trick. Rust, olive, chocolate, oatmeal, that dusty blush everyone is calling a neutral this year. Wear those shades in linen, cotton, and thin knits and you will read as seasonally appropriate without becoming a puddle in the pickup line.

The mistake I made for years was going the other direction. Summer colors in heavy fabrics. A cream sweater in ninety degrees is not a transitional outfit, it is a cry for help.

Start with a linen or cotton button up

This is the single most useful piece in my closet right now. Sleeves rolled, worn open over a tank, or buttoned and tucked into a skirt. It covers your arms so you feel put together, and it breathes so you do not suffer for it.

Buy it in oatmeal, olive, or a soft rust rather than bright white and it instantly reads September. I have been living in mine. If you want one, here is a good linen button up on Amazon in the neutral range that stays under thirty dollars most weeks.

Swap the shoes before you swap anything else

If you only change one thing, change your feet. Shoes carry more seasonal information than anything else you are wearing, and they do not make you hot.

Put away the pool slides and the very obvious summer sandals. Go to a loafer, a ballet flat, or a clean low sneaker. Same shorts, same dress, completely different season. This is the laziest possible high impact swap and it works every single time.

I wear brown loafers with everything from denim shorts to a midi dress, and ballet flats when I want it a little softer. Boots can wait. Boots in August are a lie we tell ourselves.

The denim jacket is a prop, not a coat

I carry mine. I very rarely wear mine. It lives in the passenger seat for the ten minutes it drops below seventy at a soccer field or the fifteen minutes a restaurant patio decides to be a walk in freezer.

Slung over the arm of a summer dress, it does the entire visual job of a jacket without any of the heat. Nobody is checking whether your arms are actually inside it.

Trade the tank for a knit tank

Same silhouette, same amount of skin, but a ribbed knit reads fall in a way a cotton jersey tank just does not. Tuck it into a skirt, wear it under the linen shirt, put it with denim shorts if you are still in shorts, which I absolutely am.

A ribbed knit tank in chocolate or olive is maybe fifteen dollars of effort for a whole new season of outfits. I bought three and I regret nothing.

Let a skirt do the heavy lifting

A midi skirt is somehow cooler than shorts, covers more, and looks like you thought about your day. Satin, cotton, or a soft knit, all fine. Pair it with the knit tank and the loafers and you are done in ninety seconds.

This is my favorite category of getting dressed because it requires zero styling talent. A satin midi skirt in a fall color does all the work while you are still looking for your keys.

One warm accessory finishes it

Gold hoops, a leather or suede bag, a thin belt, a scarf tied to a tote handle if you are feeling ambitious. Warm metals and warm leathers signal fall without adding a single degree of heat.

I switched to a cognac suede tote two weeks ago and it is honestly the only reason my outfits have looked seasonal at all. Everything else has been shorts.

What I am not doing yet

Not wearing boots. Not wearing a real sweater. Not putting on tights, not even thinking about tights. Not buying a wool coat because it was on sale, which I have done, more than once, and then forgotten about entirely until December.

There is this pressure to be all the way in the next season the second the school calendar starts. You do not have to be. It is still summer outside. The clothes should probably know that.

The takeaway

Fall colors, summer fabrics, better shoes, one warm accessory. That is the whole September playbook and it costs you almost nothing if you shop your own closet first. Give it two more weeks and Kansas City will do that thing where it drops thirty degrees overnight and we all act shocked. The sweaters will get their turn.

What is your one early fall switch? Drop it in the comments, I am always looking for something that is not just another cardigan.

So glad you are here.

xo, Pam
