Visiting KC for the World Cup? A Local Mom’s Honest Guide
So you are coming to Kansas City for the World Cup. First of all, welcome, we are so glad you picked our city. Second, let me save you some time. I have lived in the KC metro my whole life, and I want you to spend your trip on the good stuff, not the tourist traps. Consider this the guide I would give a friend flying in, honest opinions and all.
Eat the barbecue, but do it right
Yes, the barbecue reputation is real, and no, you should not skip it. Joe’s Kansas City started in a gas station and is still worth every minute of the line. LC’s Bar-B-Q is the unfussy, smoky, no frills spot locals love. If you are downtown with kids and want something easy and fun, the Museum of BBQ is a newer stop that leans into the whole culture of it.
My honest tip, do not try to hit five barbecue places in three days. You will hate yourself. Pick one or two, go all in, and leave room for everything else KC does well, which is a lot.

Ride the free streetcar
This is my favorite thing to tell visitors. The KC Streetcar is free, and it connects a big stretch of downtown, the River Market, and the Crown Center area. With World Cup traffic this summer, leaning on the streetcar and skipping the rental car headache for downtown days is just smart. Park once, hop on, and let it carry you around.
The kid-friendly stops worth your time
If you are traveling with kids, build your days around a couple of these. Union Station is gorgeous and Science City inside it will eat up a happy afternoon, hands on exhibits, a suspended sky bike, the works. Crown Center is connected to Union Station by an indoor walkway, which is a gift on a hot day. The Kansas City Zoo is huge and genuinely good. And the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art has those giant shuttlecocks on the lawn that every kid wants to run toward, plus the grounds are free to wander.

What I would honestly skip
I am not going to pretend everything is a must. You can skip the pressure to do a fancy sit down dinner every night, our casual spots are where the soul is. Do not over schedule. KC summers are hot and humid, and trying to cram in eight things a day with kids is how vacations go sideways. Two solid stops and some downtime beats a packed itinerary every single time.
A couple of local truths
We are the City of Fountains, so let the kids find a few. Afternoons get hot, so plan indoor or shady stuff for the middle of the day and save the outdoor fun for morning or evening. And people here are friendly in a way that surprises some visitors, so if you look lost, someone will probably help before you even ask.
The takeaway
Kansas City is an easy place to fall for. Eat one incredible barbecue meal, ride the free streetcar, pick a couple of kid-friendly stops, and leave space to just enjoy it. You do not need to do everything. You just need to do the right things slowly.
