Diaper bag packed with baby essentials

What to Pack in Your Diaper Bag (and What to Leave Home)

The diaper bag is one of those things where it is easy to either way overpack and end up carrying something that weighs fifteen pounds, or underprepare and be stuck somewhere with a blowout and nothing useful. I have been doing a lot of thinking about this and I landed on a pretty clear list of what actually needs to be in there versus what can stay home.

The Bag Itself

The bag matters more than people give it credit for because you are going to be using it constantly and you want to be able to find things in it quickly, often with one hand. I love the Freshly Picked diaper bag for its structure and the fact that it looks like an actual bag rather than something covered in pastel animals. The Fawn Design bags are another favorite for the same reason: stylish enough that you actually want to carry it, functional enough that it does its job well.

What Goes In

Diapers (more than you think you need, so probably four to six for a regular outing). A travel pack of wipes in a case that actually seals. One or two changes of clothes for baby. A changing pad. A small tube of diaper cream. A plastic bag or two for wet or dirty things. If you are formula feeding, pre-measured formula and a bottle.

A travel wipe dispenser that actually keeps wipes from drying out is worth the $8 it costs. The ones that come in the pop-up packs work fine but they dry out so fast. Get a dedicated travel case.

Wet Bags Are Your Friend

A couple of reusable wet bags in your diaper bag means you always have somewhere to put a wet onesie or a dirty cloth diaper without contaminating everything else in the bag. They zip closed, they are waterproof, and they are one of those small things that makes a big difference when you actually need them.

A Diaper Caddy for Home

Separate from the diaper bag, a diaper caddy for the nursery or living room keeps everything organized without you having to dig through the bag every time you need to change baby at home. Load it with diapers, wipes, cream, and a fresh onesie and carry it from room to room as needed.

What to Leave Home

The full toy collection. More than two outfits. Anything you have not actually needed in the last two outings. The diaper bag has a way of expanding to fill whatever space it is given, so be ruthless about what earns a permanent spot.

What is the one thing you always have in your diaper bag that other people do not think to pack? Tell me in the comments. I am still finalizing my system.
