What to Wear to a Pumpkin Patch: Cute, Comfy Fall Outfits for Moms
Every October I stand in my closet before our first pumpkin patch trip and have the same crisis. It is 48 degrees at 9 a.m., it will be 74 by noon, there is mud, there is a hay ride, and I am going to be carrying a toddler and a pumpkin at the same time. Also, I would like at least one photo where I do not look like I lost a fight with a corn maze.
So I finally worked out a formula. Here is exactly what to wear to a pumpkin patch in Kansas City, from shoes to layers to the bag that keeps your hands free.
Heads up, the product links in this post are affiliate links, which just means I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only share things I would actually use.

The pumpkin patch outfit formula
- Shoes you can hose off. Patches are muddy, even when it has not rained in a week.
- A light layer you can tie around your waist. Kansas City October weather changes its mind by the hour.
- Jeans with some stretch. You will squat, kneel, lift and climb onto a hay bale.
- A crossbody bag. Both hands are needed for kids, pumpkins and cider donuts.
- One warm color. Rust, mustard, camel or cream pop against orange pumpkins in photos.
1. Start with the right boots
This is the one piece I will not compromise on. Blundstone Chelsea boots are my pick because they slip on fast, handle mud like a champ and still look cute with jeans. Skip white sneakers unless you want them to become brown sneakers.
2. Wide leg or straight jeans
I live in Madewell wide leg jeans all fall. The stretch matters more than you think when you are hauling a wagon up a hill. Cuff them once so the hem stays out of the mud.
3. A cozy top layer
For a cool morning, a soft waffle turtleneck in a warm brown is so flattering in photos. For a more playful look, this Spooky Mama Halloween sweatshirt is just the right amount of festive without being a costume.

4. The layer you will take off by noon
An Everlane chunky cardigan is perfect for sunny days because you can tie it around your shoulders when it warms up. If the forecast says windy and cold, go with a quilted jacket instead. It packs down small enough to toss in the wagon.
5. Hands free accessories
A suede crossbody bag holds your phone, keys, wipes and a few snacks, and it looks great in fall photos. Add a felt fedora if you want a little sun protection and a lot of style. It also hides second day hair, which is a pumpkin patch requirement in my house.
Three easy outfit combos
The classic
Waffle turtleneck, wide leg jeans, Chelsea boots, felt hat and crossbody. Neutral, warm and photo ready.
The festive mom
Halloween sweatshirt, straight jeans, boots and a quilted jacket. Comfortable for chasing kids and fun for the season.
The warm afternoon
A striped long sleeve tee, jeans, boots and a cardigan tied over your shoulders. Easy to adjust as the day heats up.

What to bring besides your outfit
- Wipes and hand sanitizer (petting zoos are part of the deal)
- Cash for the smaller farms
- A change of socks for the kids
- Water and a snack for the line at the hay ride
