A World Cup Spread: Easy Watch Party Bites From Around the World

One of my favorite things about the World Cup is that it is the whole world, together, for a month. So when I host, I love building a spread that travels a little, with easy bites inspired by some of the countries playing. It turns a watch party into a tiny edible tour.

You do not need to be a chef or spend all day cooking. These are approachable, shareable ideas, plus one recipe straight from my own family roots.

A global appetizer spread

Start with Brazil, the heart of the party

If you know me, you know I am half Brazilian, so Brazil always gets a seat at my table. Pao de queijo, those chewy little cheese breads, are naturally gluten free, ridiculously easy in a blender, and the first thing to disappear. I am giving you the full recipe below.

Easy Blender Brazilian Cheese Bread (Pao de Queijo)

Naturally gluten free Brazilian cheese bread made in the blender. Chewy, cheesy, poppable little bites that are perfect for a World Cup spread, and a little nod to my Brazilian roots.
Prep Time 10 minutes

Total Time 30 minutes
Servings: 20 bites
Course: Appetizer
Cuisine: Brazilian

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 cups tapioca flour also called tapioca starch
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups grated parmesan cheese or a mix with mozzarella

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 400F and grease a mini muffin tin well.
  2. Add the milk, oil, salt, tapioca flour, eggs, and cheese to a blender and blend until completely smooth.
  3. Pour the batter into the mini muffin cups, filling each about three quarters full.
  4. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until puffed and golden. Let cool a couple of minutes, then serve warm.

Notes

Tapioca flour, sometimes labeled tapioca starch, is essential and not interchangeable with regular flour. Find it in the baking or international aisle. These are best warm from the oven, but you can reheat leftovers for a few minutes at 350F.

A nod to Mexico

Since Mexico is co hosting this World Cup, it deserves a spot on the menu. Set out a build your own taco or nacho bar, or keep it simple with great guacamole, fresh salsa, and warm chips. Easy, festive, and always a hit with a crowd.

A taste of Italy

A simple antipasto platter does a lot of work here. Cured meats, marinated veggies, fresh mozzarella, olives, and crusty bread feel a little fancy and require zero cooking. Add a caprese skewer if you are feeling cute.

Snacks and small bites on a table

Something from Spain

Patatas bravas, crispy potatoes with a smoky sauce, are an easy crowd pleaser, and a little spread of Spanish cheeses and almonds rounds it out. Tapas style food is basically made for grazing through a long match.

A bite from the Netherlands or beyond

Lean into whoever is playing. Dutch bitterballen, English sausage rolls, Argentine empanadas from a good local spot, the options are endless. You can absolutely buy a few of these ready made and just plate them nicely. No shame in a smart shortcut.

Tie it together

Add little flags or hand written cards naming each dish and its country, and suddenly your snack table looks like a thoughtful theme instead of a random pile of food. It is a five minute touch that makes guests smile.

The takeaway

An around the world spread makes a World Cup party feel like an event without much extra effort. Pick a few countries, make one or two things from scratch like the pao de queijo, buy the rest, and label it all. The world is at your table, which is the whole beautiful point.
